A gap no wider than a 50p coin can be enough for a rat to force its way into a loft, kitchen void, storeroom or under-floor space. Once inside, rats can contaminate food areas, damage wiring, chew pipe insulation and keep returning through the same weak point. Choosing the best rat proofing materials is therefore not about making a repair look tidy. It is about creating a barrier that rats cannot gnaw, pull apart or bypass.
For homes, rental properties and commercial premises across Greater Manchester, the right material depends on where the hole is, what surrounds it and whether the rat can reach it from the ground, a drain, a wall cavity or an adjoining property. A quick patch with expanding foam may appear to solve the problem, but it is rarely a lasting rat-proofing repair.
Best rat proofing materials for lasting repairs
The most effective proofing uses durable, rat-resistant materials combined with a proper inspection of every likely entry route. In most cases, stainless steel mesh, galvanised wire mesh, cement-based mortar and metal plates form the core of a dependable repair.
Stainless steel mesh
Stainless steel mesh is one of the best options for irregular gaps around pipework, air bricks, broken brickwork and joins beneath rooflines. It is difficult for rats to chew through, does not rust easily and can be shaped to fit awkward spaces. Fine welded mesh with small openings is especially useful where mice may also be active, as a gap that stops a rat may still admit a mouse.
The mesh must be fixed securely, not simply pushed into a hole. Rats are strong and persistent. If an edge can be lifted, they can work at it over time. For external gaps, the mesh should be embedded in mortar, screwed behind a vent cover or fixed with suitable mechanical fasteners.
Stainless steel costs more than basic chicken wire, but its durability makes it a sensible choice for exposed areas and long-term repairs. It is particularly useful around Manchester properties where persistent rain can quickly degrade poor-quality metal materials.
Galvanised welded wire mesh
Galvanised welded wire mesh is a practical choice for larger openings, such as damaged air vents, under-deck voids, gaps behind sheds, cellar openings and spaces around commercial bin stores. The welded construction is important. Lightweight woven wire and ordinary chicken wire can be bent, cut or pulled apart more easily.
Choose a strong gauge with openings small enough to prevent access. As a working rule, openings should be no larger than 6mm where mice are a concern, while rat-only exclusion may allow a slightly larger aperture. Bigger gaps are often an invitation to other pests, so smaller mesh usually provides better all-round protection.
Mesh is not automatically suitable for every air brick. Blocking ventilation can contribute to damp, timber problems and poor airflow beneath suspended floors. The safer approach is to fit a purpose-made vermin-proof vent cover that maintains ventilation while restricting rodent access.
Cement mortar and repair concrete
For cracks in brickwork, holes around service pipes and damage at the base of external walls, cement-based mortar is one of the most reliable rat-proofing materials available. Once properly cured, it creates a hard finish that rats cannot chew through.
Mortar works best when the opening has been cleaned back to sound material first. Loose render, crumbling pointing and rotten timber should not be covered over and forgotten. If the underlying area is unstable, the repair can crack and the entry point will reopen.
For deeper voids, technicians often combine mesh with mortar. The mesh supports the repair and stops rats burrowing into the fresh material while it cures. This is far stronger than filling a deep hole with mortar alone.
Sheet metal and metal flashing
Galvanised steel sheet, aluminium flashing or stainless steel plates are useful where a flat, solid barrier is needed. Common examples include the lower edge of timber doors, damaged garage panels, holes in shed walls, gaps around utility cupboards and areas where rats have gnawed through wood.
Metal should overlap sound material on all sides and be firmly screwed or bolted in place. A thin plate fixed over a rough hole with a few nails may look secure, yet leave an edge a rat can force open. Care is also needed around cables and pipes, as sharp metal edges can cause damage or create a safety risk.
For wooden outbuildings and commercial storage areas, metal kick plates at the bottom of doors can be particularly effective. Rats often exploit swollen, rotting or chewed timber close to ground level.
Materials that need care or should not be used alone
Some products are useful as part of a repair, but they are not reliable standalone rat barriers. This distinction saves many property owners from paying twice for the same job.
Expanding foam is the most common example. It can help close tiny voids behind a more durable barrier, reduce draughts and improve the appearance of a repair. On its own, however, rats can chew through it. The same applies to ordinary filler, silicone sealant, rubber strips and timber plugs. These may slow activity temporarily but should not be treated as rodent proofing.
Plastic air vent covers can also be vulnerable if they are thin or poorly fitted. A quality metal vent guard is usually the better choice for ground-floor and low-level vents. If a drain defect is suspected, household sealants and mesh are not an appropriate fix. Damaged drains need investigation and repair by a qualified drainage professional, often followed by a suitable rodent prevention measure within the drainage system.
Match the repair to the entry point
Proofing fails when a single visible hole is sealed without finding the route that brought the rats there. A rat in a loft may have climbed a drainpipe, crossed from an overhanging tree, entered through a broken soffit and travelled within a cavity. A rat in a kitchen may be using a gap around a waste pipe, a damaged air brick or a faulty drain.
Start outside, at ground level, and inspect slowly. Look around air bricks, boiler pipes, utility cables, doors, garage corners, drain covers, waste areas, extensions and the base of outbuildings. Rub marks, droppings, greasy smears, gnaw damage and disturbed soil can all point to regular activity.
Then inspect indoors, particularly beneath kitchen units, behind appliances, in lofts, under stairs, inside cupboards and around pipe penetrations. Do not seal an active route before considering whether rats may be trapped inside the building. In some cases, proofing is best completed after targeted treatment has reduced the infestation and activity has been monitored.
Safe proofing around homes, tenants and businesses
Good proofing should not create a new problem. Never block flues, drainage outlets, essential ventilation, escape routes or electrical access points. Tenants should report suspected holes promptly rather than trying to plug gaps around gas appliances or wiring. Landlords and property managers should record repairs and check neighbouring voids, refuse areas and shared service routes, as rats do not recognise property boundaries.
Food businesses, cafés, warehouses and offices need extra care around delivery doors, bin areas, false ceilings and service penetrations. A small opening can become a hygiene issue quickly, particularly where food, stock or packaging is stored. Proofing should sit alongside cleaning, waste control and regular inspection rather than replacing them.

Do not forget the outside conditions
Even the strongest mesh and mortar will struggle if the exterior gives rats easy cover and access. Keep bins closed, clear loose rubbish, store bird feed securely and avoid leaving pet food outside overnight. Trim dense vegetation away from walls where possible, and keep stacked timber, pallets and stored items raised from the ground and away from the building.
Proofing is most effective when it is treated as a barrier system: hard materials at entry points, sensible maintenance around the property and prompt action when fresh signs appear.
